What is meal replacement? Terms, choices and use
Similar words on packaging can mean different things. Here is a map of the terms, five label checks and a practical route to your next step.

Short answer: Start with the product's intended use, then the serving and finally practical requirements. Meal replacement is used in different ways. A powdered meal, protein supplement and weight-control product may look similar from a distance but serve different purposes.
What does meal replacement mean?
In everyday language, the word often means something eaten or drunk instead of another meal. It describes an occasion: perhaps lunch at work or food during travel. It does not itself say how many grams the product contains, which nutrients a serving provides or how often it should be used.
There are also specific rules for claims about meal replacement for weight control and a separately regulated category for total diet replacement for weight control. The Swedish Food Agency's guidance on foods for specific groups distinguishes them. Neither a familiar word nor a shaker image is therefore enough to determine which type of product is in front of you.
Four terms that need distinguishing
| Expression | What you are looking at | Check on the label | The expression does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete meal / meal shake | Product description of food that can be used for a meal. | Which serving is intended, and what do the instructions say? | That the product should replace all food or is intended for weight treatment. |
| Protein shake / protein powder | A product where protein is central to its use. | Energy and other contents in the quantity you actually use. | That a shake containing protein is automatically a full meal. |
| Meal replacement for weight control | Products with specific conditions for weight-control claims. | The specific labelling and conditions for use. | That every product called a meal replacement serves the same purpose. |
| Total diet replacement for weight control | A specifically regulated product category intended to replace the entire daily diet. | The product's intended audience, instructions and warnings. | That an ordinary meal shake can be used in the same way. |
A protein product can be part of a meal alongside other food. A powdered meal can be a practical food format. There is no point naming a category best before knowing which occasion you want to solve. The product's actual labelling needs to support the conclusion.
Two package descriptions – two different questions
Illustrative example, no actual labels: Package A says “protein shake” and gives values for 30 g powder. Package B says “meal shake” and gives values for 100 g. The first step is to compare the quantities the instructions actually refer to, rather than placing two large protein figures side by side.
Then ask what the rest of the serving contains, what must be added and how it should be used. If A only adds protein, other parts of the meal may need to come from accompanying food. If B is described as a meal, still check contents and storage. Neither description shows that the product should replace all the day's food.
Choose a detailed guide based on what you need to understand
Terms, format and declaration answer different questions. Here is the map that makes the next step easier:
- What needs to be available? The format guide compares powder, bottles, bars and food needing heat. It covers water, refrigeration, equipment and what you carry.
- What do I get in my quantity? The declaration guide shows how grams and values are calculated together. It distinguishes powder from added drinks and contents from personal needs.
- What trade-offs does it involve? The guide to advantages and limitations starts with your everyday life. Taste, washing up, variety and purchases can all be part of the decision.
Five checks before buying
- Intended use. Read description and instructions together. Is this a meal, part of a meal or a product with specific conditions for use?
- The same quantity. Note serving weight and whether the declaration is per 100 g, per serving or for the prepared product. Do not confuse g and ml.
- The entire contents. Review energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates and fibre where stated. Check ingredients and allergen labelling for the exact flavour.
- Resources and storage. Are clean water and a clean container available? Is refrigeration or heat required? What happens after opening the package?
- Actual purchase. Calculate the quantity you use, but also check how many whole packages you need to buy, shipping and any additions.
Front-of-pack claims have their own conditions. EU rules for nutrition claims and the Swedish Food Agency's guidance on nutrition and health claims are starting points. A slogan does not replace checking the actual serving.
Meal or protein powder – start with the purpose
If you already have a meal and want extra protein, the question differs from missing lunch. Compare products that answer your goal. In the comparison between meals and protein supplements you work with declarations for two actual quantities. A higher protein figure alone does not prove that the rest of the meal works.
Arrange one difficult meal first
Choose a recurring occasion: “Wednesday's lunch between two meetings” is more useful than “I'll change everything”. Write where you will eat, which resources are available and what usually stops you. Then choose a possible solution and a backup.
On Wednesday you might bring a packed lunch when refrigeration is available. Another week you might bring dry powder and mix it there, if clean water and a clean container are available. Afterwards, review taste, effort, quantity and whether the food was actually eaten. Your first ComFoo mix has a dedicated guide to grams, liquid and instructions.
Common questions about the terms
Does complete meal mean I should replace all food?
No. The product description does not itself give that instruction. Read intended use and distinguish ordinary meal shakes from the specifically regulated total diet replacement for weight-control category.
Does powder format determine nutritional content?
No. Powder is a format. You need to know the product, quantity and added liquid before comparing contents.
Can I use the same guide to choose weight treatment?
This guide explains words and label checks. Questions about changing meal habits for weight are covered separately in the article about skipping meals.
