Choosing a meal replacement: a buying guide with open criteria
Start with the purpose, choose your requirements and compare real products on clear bases. Build a shortlist you can explain and check.
Read the guide
The best choice is one you can justify for the occasion. Start with the location and your purpose. Then set essential requirements, review the same serving basis and compare the whole purchase. We sell ComFoo and name no independent test winner.
What do you mean by the best meal replacement?
Do you want lunch without a kitchen, to try particular contents or to buy a travel format? These are different questions. An option may work well in the office but be impractical without water. A flavour may be your favourite without someone else sharing the impression.
This guide covers the buying method. The main guide explains the terms and the format guide the resources. Here you use those answers to make a shortlist.
Essential requirements come before preferences
An essential requirement may be that the product can be used at the location and its ingredient labelling can be reviewed against your requirements. A preference may be hot food, a flavour direction or a shared break. A cheap or appealing product does not solve an unmet practical requirement.
Distinguish met, unmet and unknown. Unknown preparation means it needs checking. A blank allergen value is not reliable information. Your own label mark shows you performed a check, not that the blog medically approved the product.
An open template for up to three options
| Information | Option A | Option B | Option C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product, flavour, version | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| Occasion and format | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| Grams / ml / declared serving | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| Preparation and storage | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| Ingredients and allergen labelling | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| First order incl. VAT and shipping | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| Repeat purchase price and terms | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| Source and check date | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
Use the template above for your own products. Note water requirements, storage and repeat purchases with pen and paper; a shortlist needs no account.
Equal energy and equal occasions are two questions
A content comparison can describe named recipes at equal energy when the products and instructions support it. A cost comparison may instead concern the same number of each product's declared servings. Their contents may then differ, and the difference needs to be visible.
Illustrative example: a price for a small protein serving and a price for a larger meal serving are two serving prices. They do not prove the same meal. Do not scale a product's dosage to create a price contest. The meal/supplement guide explains their use.
First order and repeat purchases
Write the amount for whole packages, VAT basis, shipping, any minimum purchase and selected purchase type. Mark a one-time offer separately from the usual reorder price. Discounts from one seller must not change the price recorded for another.
The cost of what is consumed in a week is not the same as the whole first order. The work lunch calculation shows the difference. Let the purchase also account for how you want to try flavours and how much will remain.
Choose the right detailed comparison
- Huel and ComFoo – named powder recipes and prices.
- Plenny Shake and ComFoo – your own SEK amounts and each 400 kcal serving.
- MËTTA and ComFoo – declared servings and first purchase.
- Arla bottle and ComFoo powder – format and cost per respective occasion.
- Diet Shake and ComFoo – different serving quantities and purposes.
Try a format and review it
Choose a difficult meal occasion and use current instructions. Note taste, preparation, transport and washing up. Assess that occasion's result before a bigger decision. A year in a headline does not replace updated sources; dates here show the work actually performed.
Questions before buying
Why is no winner named?
Criteria and conditions differ, and ComFoo is the seller publishing the guide. The template keeps requirements and information open for your own options.
What do I do with unknown labelling?
Check it before deciding. Missing evidence does not count as meeting an ingredient requirement.
Are powder contents the same as a prepared drink?
No. Liquid and additions need reading and calculating on the correct basis.
