Preparedness / Menu plan
A week's food supply: menus, water and resources
Plan food as a week that needs to work. Write your own meals, make water and preparation visible and check what happens when electricity or refrigeration is missing.
Read the guide
Food supplies need to be usable. Plan at least a week with food the household eats, clean water, suitable storage and a cooking method that works when normal resources are unavailable. A full shelf is the start, not the whole plan.
What does the week need to handle?
The Swedish Civil Defence Agency, MCF, describes home preparedness for at least one week. For food, you need to know who will eat, what they actually use and how food can be prepared during an outage.
Check household circumstances separately: children, pets, ingredient requirements and other needs. The adult water reference is not a multiplier automatically applicable to everyone.
Make a menu with resource columns
| Day | Meals / your own servings | Preparation water | Heat / refrigeration / electricity | Utensils and label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| 2 | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| 3 | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| 4 | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| 5 | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| 6 | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
| 7 | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
One row can summarise the day's meals, but write all resources required. A blank water box means unknown information. Zero needs to be an actually checked value from your planned food.
A partially filled planning example
| Day / occasion | Chosen route | Check | Backup question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1, one occasion | Food eaten directly according to labelling. | Opener, utensils and storage after opening. | Is another option available if the package cannot be opened? |
| Day 2, one occasion | Hot dish with its own instructions. | Water, heat source, fuel and cleaning. | What can be eaten without heat? |
| Day 3, one occasion | Powder according to the exact product label. | Clean water, container and serving basis. | What is available if clean preparation water is missing? |
This is not a complete daily diet or meal quantity for two people. The example shows how dependencies become visible; the household's actual menu needs to fill the rest.
Plan water without double-counting
MCF's water advice for adults uses 3–5 litres per adult per day for drinking, cooking and hygiene. Two adults for seven days therefore gives 2 × 7 × 3–5 = 42–70 litres as an adult reference.
Preparation water for powder, porridge or other dishes belongs to cooking in that resource plan. Do not automatically add 42–70 litres plus all menu water as a new official requirement. Instead check how known components fit and which needs remain unknown.
What fails without electricity, refrigeration or water?
- Without normal electricity: check dishes requiring electrical preparation.
- Without refrigeration: review storage before and after opening and choose workable options.
- Without clean water: food needing mixing requires another plan.
- Without a normal stove: choose an approved method and follow the equipment's safety instructions.
Try one of your own meals with the intended resources. Read MCF's safety advice and the equipment instructions. Avoid improvised heat sources.
Store, label and rotate
Sort by each package's date and storage. Use and replace items in normal meals so supplies do not become a collection of products nobody eats. Note what happens after opening; this is different from unopened shelf life.
Your own shopping list is in the stock calculation for supplies. Usable quantities at home are deducted there and whole packages rounded up.
Krismat comes after the household's plan
We sell ComFoo and present Krismat as our commercial complement. MCF does not recommend a specific ComFoo product. Krismat needs clean water and its own porridge or shake instructions, and should not be treated as the household's entire supply.
The food types guide compares ready-to-eat food, dry goods, hot dishes and powder on a shared resource basis.
Questions about food supplies
Is 42–70 litres a plan for everyone in a household?
It is the adult reference for two adults over seven days. Children, pets and special needs require their own checks.
Does a completed menu guarantee nutritional needs?
No. The rows show your choices and resource checks, not an individual nutritional assessment.
What does a blank water box mean?
That the information remains outstanding. It is not treated as zero litres.
